The best matcha

The Browgeous guide to choosing the right matcha 💚

For me, matcha is more than just green tea — it's a small ritual, a moment to slow down.
Rich in antioxidants and gentle, it's as good for the body as it is for the mind.

But not all matchas are created equal.
Quality depends on four key elements: its grade, origin, color, and preparation.

1. Grade

For a long time, I was told that culinary grade matcha was perfect for lattes. But over time (and after several tests), I realized that ceremonial grade matcha makes all the difference!

Culinary grade: often more bitter, darker, perfect for cooking (smoothies, pastries).

Ceremonial grade: the finest quality. Young leaves, ultra-smooth texture, sweet and umami taste.

This is the one I use and recommend on Browgeous — a ceremonial Japanese matcha, grown in renowned mountainous regions.

2. Terroir

Just like with wine, a good terroir yields a more refined product.

Good soil and high altitude = a richer, rounder matcha. The best regions in Japan are Uji, Nishio, Kagoshima, and Kirishima — the latter being volcanic, with rich, pure soil.

The one I chose for Browgeous comes precisely from Kirishima, and you can really taste the difference: a unique depth and sweetness.

3. Color

Bright green = fresh matcha, rich in chlorophyll and well-preserved.

Dull or yellowish green = often oxidized matcha or blended with other ingredients.

4. Preparation

Even the best matcha can be ruined by poor preparation.

Here's my favorite way:

• Sift ½ teaspoon of matcha.

• Add a little hot (never boiling) water.

• Whisk until frothy.

• Add organic oat milk (without additives or gums).

• And a drizzle of agave syrup — my favorite sweetener, because unlike honey or maple syrup, it doesn't overpower the matcha flavor.

Each ingredient influences the final taste, so choose simple and balanced products.

5. "Clean" matcha above all else

Some matchas contain sugar, artificial flavors, or texturizing agents.

At Browgeous, I select a matcha that is 100% pure, organic, and tested for the absence of heavy metals and pesticides.

Because even in your cup, beauty comes from purity 💚
